No Burn
"Code or no code"
By David Witthuhn
The facts whether No
Burn® actually complies with the City of Big Bear Lake Ordinance and
whether there is certification when applied by contractor verses a Certified
No Burn® applicator.
I am the owner for
No Burn of Riverside which owns the entire county of Riverside over
dealers and wholesale suppliers. I live in Big Bear Lake.
There has been much confusion of not only
different products to use in compliance but whether a product complies with the
ordinance of the city of Big Bear Lake.
I can assure contractors and anyone else that
No Burn® is in compliance with not only Big
Bear but has a recent ICC publication
(ESR-1838) when applied properly.
Read
here
. We use
licensed contractors only with No Burn application. Any person wishing a copy
of the approval letter from the City can email me and I will gladly send you
one.

With that said here are the details for
No Burn® to be in compliance with the codes.
A product is tested with certain strict
code requirements. It works as described when tested with explained
application procedures. When the product is applied per manufacture
specifications then the results are explained and used to comply with code
requirements.
Certainly when applied the product will work!
This is
where lab testing and people like the ICC help to protect us. If the
manufacture says this, then does it work?
To get discounts from insurance
companies it must be applied by certified applicators.
The ICC report
here says it must be applied in two coats using approx 1 gallon per 300 sq.
ft. It must be applied by an approved No Burn©,
Inc applicator. It must be applied in two coats with two hours drying time
in-between and never below 40 or above 100 degrees surface temperature. This is
just a few requirements to make your home safe from fire and mold. A butane
torch will not start or burn the treated surface when tested.
Many structures have been saved already.
Lloyds of London has not lost one structure piece of wood!
I recently heard from one of my suppliers that a
contractor that bought 2 gallons of a different product then applied it to an
entire house. Considering 2 gallons only covers 300 sq. feet of applied space
that would be impossible to comply with any code, let alone fire requirements.
It was a clear deception for building inspectors to get certification from the
city and avoid the additional cost
of wallboard. Unfortunately this is one example of things some contractors use
to escape code requirements. Most licensed contactors try very hard to comply
with codes and are very reputable.
As I have stated, once certified the Builder
can qualify for up to 30% discount on Builders Risk insurance (fire insurance
Part) saving almost the cost of the application with labor included. The end
user, the homeowner having a certified application may receive 10 to 15%
annual discount on their homeowner’s insurance. We use CDJ for Builders Risk
insurance. It is underwritten by Lloyds of London.
The large builders will usually not
save money by applying the fire retardant with their own crews.
There will be no builders discount (receiving up to
%30 or more!), no compliance with City building or fire codes and
no continual discount for the homeowner. (They are receiving 10% to 15%)
Just because a city inspector signs off on
your application does not certify it. If the application was not certified
by a
No Burn®
certified applier and they find it was not applied correctly then the liability
is the builders. The City is not liable period. Without
No Burn® certification
discounts are not available.
It is very clear why you should have
a
No Burn®
Dealer apply and certify
the product. Save money and not have the additional liability.
